How much do you spend on bags? After reading your post yesterday regarding expensive, professional bags, I wonder who out there can afford such a bag? I am a lawyer at a big firm and live in DC. While I realize I may be somewhat conservative when it comes to clothes I tend to buy designer clothes on sale or through Gilt or Ideeli , I am definitely not cheap.

Like most lawyers I know, I have student loans and a mortgage.

You will need just a bit of sewing under the Chantilly lace see photos The exterior 2 layers of Chantilly Lace is in great condition!! The only real issue at all with the dress is one small loss of velvet at the hemline see photo You could hem it up but it’s already fairly short, so I might consider adding Chantilly lace trim at the hemline, or satin or velvet ribbon which would lengthen the dress At first glance, you will believe this to be a black velvet coat embroidered with gold lame, but at closer inspection, you will see that this is actually a ‘s gold painted velvet coat!

The Western Apache Indians of Arizona have a beadwork tradition that extends back at least to the middle of the nineteenth century. It contains distinctive elements, as well as features that demonstrate its affinity with other Southwestern beadmaking styles. Apache Indians were relative newcomers to the Southwest arriving sometime between and , traveling from the Northwestern part of North America.

Those Apache bands that settled in east central Arizona have collectively been called Western Apache. Like their neighbors of the Plains, Western Apaches made clothing of animal hides and often decorated clothing and accessories with painted designs made from vegetable pigments, and later with the European-introduced glass beads or with a combination of these elements. Apache Indian Crown Dance click arrow in the frame on lower right Beadwork is not a craft commonly associated with Southwestern Indian tribes, who are best known for their pottery, basketry and textiles.

Apache clothing styles with sewn beadwork resemble that of tribes of the Southern Plains and Northwest area Great Basin. Some Apache beadwork-strung and braided necklaces and netting work shows influence from the Yuman tribes of the Colorado River. The Jicarilla, Lipan and Kiowa have a style very similar to that of the Southern Plains tribes near whom they lived. Beadwork styles of the Mescalero, Chiricahua and Western Apache are all similar to each other, but lack a strong Plains stylistic connection.

Four major beadwork techniques are represented in Western Apache designs: Additionally, the sides of pouches and necklaces are sometimes trimmed with blanket stitch. Images of Apaches in studio photographs of the s provide some of the earliest documentation of Apache use of glass beads for ornamentation.

Beadwork and Basketry Faced with continuing loss of their lands and the decline of hunting and fishing in the 19th century, the Cherokee Indian Tribe and their relatives, the Iroquois nations of New York State and Canada, came up with a successful survival strategy: Tourists loved their Indian designs. Cherokee Indian beadwork and basketry existed before recorded history when beads made from shells and bird bones were used instead of the tiny glass cylinders first brought to North America by European explorers in the 16th century.

They used the teeth, bones, and claws of wild animals to decorate their clothing.

Each one of these reservations would subsequently produce souvenirs for the emerging tourist trade at Niagara Falls. As colonialist incursions increasingly undermined traditional ways of life, the Iroquois developed survival strategies, the most successful of which was making articles for sale at Niagara Falls, where tourists flocked to witness the grandeur of nature.

Iroquois artists made souvenirs and also useful objects, such as moccasins, hats, pincushions, and various types of containers. We may never know exactly when they began producing beadwork for the souvenir trade, but the dating of the earliest material suggests it began soon after the end of the Revolutionary War. Travelers to the area were confronted by the presence of the Haudenosaunee and many actually sought them out.

The traditional arts that existed prior to the American Revolution changed, and in many cases disappeared, to be replaced by the emergence of hybrid styles of commoditized beadwork that in the early nineteenth century were sold predominately at Niagara Falls. One of the earliest Haudenosaunee souvenir beaded bags that was collected at the Falls is illustrated in figure 1. Either Seneca or Tuscarora. An old, hand-written note that came with the bag indicated it was collected at the Falls around Figure 2 — Early 19th century beaded bag, likely Tuscarora, that was collected by the anthropologist F.
