A few nights ago, just as I was stumbling to bed, I heard something. It was a distinct fluttering sound—occasionally accented by a light thump. It was something I was able to place, all too well. A bat flying around our bedroom. Resigned to late-night adrenaline, I found an old blanket, wrapped the critter up, and released it in the backyard. Truth be told, it probably found its way back into my attic faster than I made it back to bed. A little backstory is appropriate.
Lovelock Cave: A Tale of Giants or A Giant Tale of Fiction?
The bat, along with an orange spider and a yellow-spotted frog are among a host of new species found in a region of Papua New Guinea. More than animals and plants were revealed for the first time after two months of surveying in the rugged and little-explored Nakanai and Muller mountain ranges last year. The creature bears more than a passing resemblance to the Star Wars Jedi Master Yoda The findings included two mammals, 24 species of frog, nine plants, nearly new insects including damselflies, crickets and ants, and around spiders.
A white tipped-tail mouse, at least one ant and several of the crickets, or katydids, are so different from other known species they each represent an entirely new genus, the scientists said.

Cave-dating research published by Australian geologists has found that the Jenolan Caves, in central NSW, are the world’s oldest discovered open caves. Until 20 years ago most scientists thought the Jenolan Caves were no more than a few thousand years old. In geologists estimated that the caves might be between 90 and million years old.
Dr Armstrong Osborne, a senior lecturer at the University of Sydney, has long suspected that the caves are older than had been widely recognised, but says he was surprised to find they dated back to the Carboniferous to million years ago. To put it into context, the Blue Mountains began to form million years ago; dinosaurs became extinct 65 million years ago, and Tasmania was joined to the mainland as recently as 10, years ago.
But no one imagined that they would be more than million years old. This was totally off the planet. The technique is a variation of conventional potassium-argon dating, which can calculate the age of minerals by measuring levels of decay caused by radioactive potassium. CSIRO Petroleum Resources researcher Dr Horst Zwingmann says the age of the caves was determined by dating the clay minerals that crystallised when volcanic ash entered the caves, and which now forms much of the mud in the Temple of Baal and Orient caves.

Their Wrongs and Claims. In this story, the Paiutes speak of a great battle that took place which led to their extermination at site known today as Lovelock Cave. During the early part of the 20th century archaeologists found thousands of artifacts inside this cave leading to a lengthy excavation of the site and leading to some speculation that the Paiute legend was real.
The tule is a fibrous water plant, which according to legend, the giants wove into rafts to escape attacks by the Paiute. They used the rafts to navigate across what remained then of Lake Lahontan, an ancient lake that once covered most of northern Nevada during the last ice age. As the Paiute tale goes, after years of warfare, all the tribes in the area joined together to rid themselves of the Si-Te-Cah. One day, as the tribes chased down the last remaining red-haired giants, they took refuge in a cave.
The Paiutes demanded their enemy come out of the cave and fight, but the giants refused. The coalition of tribes proceeded to shoot arrows at them while starting a large fire at the mouth of the cave. The smoke drove out a few who died in a hail of arrows while the rest were all either burned alive or asphyxiated. Over time, the entrance to the cave would collapse leaving it accessible only to bats and cut off from human contact.
In , a mining engineer from Lovelock named John T. Reid was told of the legend by local Indians, who took him to the site to prove it existed.

The cavities are influenced by the very slow flow of the ice, which tends to collapse the caves again. Glacier caves are sometimes misidentified as ” ice caves “, though this latter term is properly reserved for bedrock caves that contain year-round ice formations. Fracture cave[ edit ] Fracture caves are formed when layers of more soluble minerals, such as gypsum, dissolve out from between layers of less soluble rock. These rocks fracture and collapse in blocks of stone.
Talus cave[ edit ] Talus caves are formed by the openings among large boulders that have fallen down into a random heap, often at the bases of cliffs.

Recent Fossils Grand Canyon has so much more than pretty scenery. It contains an amazing diversity of rock formations with an abundance of fossils hidden within. The sedimentary rocks exposed throughout the canyon are rich with marine fossils such as crinoids, brachiopods, and sponges with several layers containing terrestrial fossils such as leaf and dragonfly wing impressions, and footprints of scorpions, centipedes, and reptiles.
Ancient fossils preserved in the rock layers range from algal mats and microfossils from Precambrian Time 1, million to million years ago to a multitude of body and trace fossils from the Paleozoic Era million years ago. What about dinosaur fossils? Not at Grand Canyon! The rocks of the canyon are older than the oldest known dinosaurs. If you find a fossil, please leave it for others to discover and scientists to study.
You are welcome to take a picture or make a drawing of the fossil, then go to one of the visitor centers to see if a park ranger can help you identify it. Lacy bryozoan fossil found in the Redwall Limestone. Fossils are the preserved remains of ancient life, such as bones, teeth, wood, and shells. Trace fossils represent the presence or behavior of ancient life, without body parts being present. Footprints, worm burrows, and insect nests are examples of trace fossils.

It’s really a spectacular waterfall and one of few you can actually swim at. I went there the other day to check out the waterfall and see if it’s really OK to swim at. I was really surprised, the waterfall is beautiful, it was a super hot day and swimming in the crystal clear water was exactly what I needed after driving in the heat for 60km. My only regret was that I didn’t have time to check out the other waterfalls in the National Park, something for another trip. If your going to Pai then i suggest you take this route there and spend your time at the waterfalls along the way.

Really good fun, this day though I didn’t get a chance. Shoot a gun in Chiang Mai When you get to Mae Dtang there will be no signs at all but here’s a tip, first you’ll pass an intersection with big signs that go to Pai, don’t turn left at this intersection, keep going, you’ll pass Tesco Lotus on your left and it’s only about meters up the road. You’ll get to a 3 way light intersection and the Mae Dtang market will be on your left, look and study the pictures so you know where you are but again it’s not far past the Tesco Lotus, you’ll recognize the market because it looks like all other markets.

The karst topography has contributed to a large number of sinkholes, cenotes “ocean holes” , and caves. As rain passes through the atmosphere, it picks up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, forming a weak carbonic acid. This acid then dissolves the island limestone, creating a Swiss-cheese appearance in some places and forming calcium carbonate. Indeed, there are thousands of sinkholes on the island historically known as “banana pits,” as they tended to collect rich, decaying vegetable matter and thus were ideal enclosures for growing banana trees.

At this rate they could have grown ft in just years. The picture at right is of a bat discovered in in a stalagmite, in Carlsbad Caverns , New Mexico. The stalagmite grew around the bat before it could decay or be eaten. The temperature where this bat is found is just above freezing at a constant 40o F. The water dripping from the stalactite above it is vary salty. This would impede but not prevent decay. Also it would not prevent the bat from being eaten. So this stalagmite still had to form quite rapidly, certainly far less than 5, years.
Bat found in a stalagmite Many caves do have slow stalactite and stalagmite growth rates today. However there is evidence that suggests that caves were formed rapidly by sulfuric acid dissolution rather than weaker and slower carbonic acid. This process would not only have speeded up cave formation but also the growth rates of stalactites and stalagmites.

History[ edit ] From the s, when exploration of Hellhole began, to the s, cavers had mapped approximately 8. But Hellhole was essentially closed to the caving community in , two years after a lease on the land including its entrance was obtained by the Greer Limestone Plant , a part of Greer Industries, Inc. The entrance to Hellhole is owned by a private landowner who has never wished to sell the land around it. The quarry, immediately to the west of the cave entrance, is operated by Greer Limestone Company owned by West Virginia businessman and politician John Raese.
Greer leased the entrance to Hellhole from the landowner in , and as the leasee, soon began to deny most access to the cave. In the s, at urging of the WV DNR, Greer also began to allow limited exploration and mapping of the cave one or two trips per year.

Just a few lines have been used to outline more clearly the shape of a small mammoth, about 20 cm wide, taken up by the flowstone or stalagmite cascade at the entrance to the Brunel Chamber. I have highlighted the shape in the right hand photograph. The zone is heavily covered with calcite.
It is not possible to determine whether the front of this animal existed at one time. Length ca 40 cm. I had noticed in several images that the artist s used natural irregularities in the surfaces to emphasize a three-dimensional appearance. I wonder if some of the odd placements of the figures is because the artist saw something to add to the realism of his picture.
