Acton was still unemployed and managing another startup, and he decided to join the company.

This specialisation was because the Admiralty wanted to know the maritime strength of the Imperial German Navy. This specialisation was formalised before During the First World War in , the two sections underwent administrative changes so that the foreign section became the section MI1 c of the Directorate of Military Intelligence.
He typically signed correspondence with his initial C in green ink. This usage evolved as a code name , and has been adhered to by all subsequent directors of SIS when signing documents to retain anonymity. Most of its results came from military and commercial intelligence collected through networks in neutral countries, occupied territories, and Russia. In August , Cumming created the new passport control department, providing diplomatic cover for agents abroad. The post of Passport Control Officer provided operatives with diplomatic immunity.
Around , it began increasingly to be referred to as the Secret Intelligence Service SIS , a title that it has continued to use to the present day and which was enshrined in statute in the Intelligence Services Act During the Second World War, the name MI6 was used as a flag of convenience, the name by which it is frequently known in popular culture since. The ship’s erratic movements and the odd set of her sails led Morehouse to suspect that something was wrong. From the name on her stern the pair established that this was the Mary Celeste; they then climbed aboard, where they found the ship deserted. The sails, partly set, were in a poor condition, some missing altogether, and much of the rigging was damaged, with ropes hanging loosely over the sides.
The main hatch cover was secure, but the fore and lazarette hatches were open, their covers beside them on the deck. The ship’s single lifeboat, a small yawl that had apparently been stowed across the main hatch, was missing, while the binnacle housing the ship’s compass had shifted from its place, its glass cover broken.
In Briggs’s cabin, Deveau found personal items scattered about, including a sheathed sword under the bed, but most of the ship’s papers were missing, together with the captain’s navigational instruments. Galley equipment was neatly stowed away; there was no food prepared or under preparation, but there were ample provisions in the stores. There were no obvious signs of fire or violence; the evidence indicated an orderly departure from the ship, by means of the missing lifeboat.
Under maritime law, a salvor could expect a substantial share of the combined value of rescued vessel and cargo, the exact award depending on the degree of danger inherent in the salvaging. Morehouse divided Dei Gratia’s crew of eight between the two vessels, sending Deveau and two experienced seamen to Mary Celeste, while he and four others remained on Dei Gratia. The weather was relatively calm for most of the way to Gibraltar, but with each ship seriously undermanned, progress was slow.

While doctors have long been making decisions to withdraw ”life support” measures for people in circumstances where the care is futile or the patient does not want to live with extreme disability, they say increasing requests for people’s pacemakers to be turned off raise difficult ethical questions and may even expose them to criminal charges of murder, manslaughter or assisted suicide.
A leading intensive care specialist from Newcastle, Peter Saul, said one technician at his hospital refused to turn off a dying woman’s pacemaker at her daughter’s request because he feared being accused of killing the woman in potentially unethical or illegal circumstances. When that happened, Dr Saul was called to assess the request which involved an elderly woman who had suffered a series of infections over months.
He said the woman, who had pneumonia and was suffering breathlessness and bed sores, had lost a lot of weight and was very drowsy. While it was estimated she would die ”within days, not months”, she was unable to express her wishes about whether she would like her pacemaker switched off to hasten her death. Her daughter believed she would not want to go on living and insisted the pacemaker be turned off.
Advertisement ”The problem we had with the pacemaker case is that we knew when we pressed the button which said ‘turn off the pacemaker’, that the patient would become unconscious in five seconds and be dead within a minute. So, it’s morally the same as if we never put the pacemaker in in the first place. It wasn’t burdensome, she was quite unaware of its functioning, so the excuse for turning it off was unclear, other than a wish that she would die painlessly.

By Zach Carter So that happened. This week, the House of Representatives voted to help banks and car dealerships discriminate against customers of color. Listen to HuffPost’s analysis of the auto market discrimination bill in the podcast embedded above. Most dealerships are authorized to sell cars and make loans to finance the purchase. They send their customers’ financial information to a bank, which then sends the dealer an appropriate interest rate for a borrower with that particular credit profile.
But banks also permit dealers to “mark up” the interest rate on the loan to a higher level, and allow the dealership to pocket some of the additional charge. That, of course, creates incentives for the dealer to charge people higher interest rates. But lawsuits dating back to the s have shown that people of color are more likely to have their interest rates marked up than white borrowers. Black, Latino and Asian-American borrowers also tend to see higher markups than white borrowers.
Paul Morigi via Getty Images The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau issued regulatory guidance in instructing companies on how to cope with this phenomenon. Since the markup practice tends to result in overcharging borrowers of color, the CFPB recommended that banks and dealerships ditch the practice. If they didn’t, however, they needed to ensure that borrowers with similar credit profiles weren’t receiving different interest rates due to their race or national origin.
This was apparently too much for banks and auto dealers to handle. They lobbied for a bill that would nullify the CFPB’s regulatory move.
